Technical Committees & Standards Program

Standards are paramount to the infrastructure that makes up our modern civilization. In the welding industry, they ensure uniformity across all platforms, providing engineers with the proper specifications needed to develop quality designs and fabrications. At the heart of these standards are technical committees. They steer the propulsion for innovation through all the processes of the welding industry.

The Technical Activities Committee (TAC) oversees the AWS standards development program. AWS standards are developed in technical committees that are classified according to the following types:

ANSI Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) Z49, Safety in Welding and Cutting, is administered by AWS and produces the document ANSI Z49.1, Safety in Welding, Cutting and Allied Processes.
