This guide contains recommendations for establishing a thermal spray operator qualification program. Information related to training, knowledge and skill testing, and coating system inspection methods is provided. Example thermal spray operator qualification tests (TSOQT) parameters and forms are provided, to address common engineering and corrosion control applications using arc, flame, atmospheric plasma, and high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spray processes.

This guide presents an industrial process for the application of thermal spray coatings (TSC) on steel. It covers safety, job/contract description, background and requirements, selection of TSCs, TSC operator qualification, materials and equipment, application-process method with quality-control check points, Job Control Record, maintenance and repair of TSCs, records, debris containment and control, and warranty.

Specification for the Application of Thermal Spray Coatings to Machine Elements for OEM and Repair

This standard defines requirements for thermal spray coating systems for OEM and repair applications. Included are HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) coatings that can be used as an alternative to hard chrome plating. The essential equipment, procedures for surface preparation, and the application of specific thermal spray coatings and sealers are detailed with in-process quality control checkpoints. This standard also presents management requirements and procedures for qualification, procedure approval, and documentation. Also covered are approved applications for thermal spray processes used for OEM and repair of machinery components along with minimum training requirements for thermal spray operators and inspectors. This specification has several annexes including annexes on safety, protocols for the U.S. Navy shipboard machinery, bend testing, and bond testing.

Specification for Thermal Spraying Zinc Anodes on Steel Reinforced Concrete

This AWS standard is a specification for thermal spraying zinc anodes on steel reinforced concrete. This standard is formatted as an industrial process instruction. The scope includes: job description, safety, pass/fail job reference standards, feedstock materials, equipment, a step-by-step process instruction for surface preparation, thermal spraying, and quality control. There are five annexes, including job control record and portable adhesion testing.

Specification for the Application of Thermal Spray Coatings (Metallizing) of Aluminum, Zinc, and Their Alloys and Composites for the Corrosion Protection of Steel

This AWS/NACE/SSPC joint standard contains requirements for the application of zinc and aluminum alloys to steel substrates using thermal spray, often referred to as "metalizing." The metal coatings are referred to as metalized or "thermal spray coatings" (TSCs). The standard includes requirements for surface preparation, coating application, repairing coating defects, measurement of coating thickness, adhesion testing of the applied coating, and application of sealers and topcoats over the thermally sprayed metal coating. This standard is intended for use by facility owners and specifiers who develop project specifications for the application of thermally sprayed coatings for the preservation and maintenance of steel structures and components. The standard also may be used by thermal spray coating inspectors to assess the quality of surface preparation and coating application, and by thermal spray contractors to develop project work plans.

This specification provides the as-manufactured chemical composition classification requirements for solid and composite wires and ceramic rods for thermal spraying. Requirements for standard sizes, marking, manufacturing, and packaging are included.

Specification for Thermal Spraying Powder

This specification establishes the requirements for the classification of powders for various thermal spraying processes. The requirements include particle size distribution, apparent density, flow characteristics, and chemical composition. Requirements for manufacturing, labeling and packaging are also included.
