Directed energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing (AM) process defined by ASTM as using focused thermal energy sources, such as electric arc, electron beam, and laser, to deposit material at relatively high rates for producing large build volumes. DED can be used to build large metal parts using wire (wire-DED) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW-DED) as the heat source.
