AWS Penetrant Testing (PT Type II- Method C)


Scope of Endorsement
Section 2 of AWS QC1, Standard for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors provides for endorsements that may be added to the CWI and SCWI certifications.

Endorsements are defined in AWS QC1 as the approval of an additional skill documented in writing and added to a certification credential.

This endorsement shall govern visible Penetrant Testing (PT) of welds using the solvent removable method in ferrous and non-ferrous materials manufactured from non-porous materials.

Qualification Requirements
All candidates applying for this endorsement shall hold a current AWS CWI or SCWI credential.

How endorsement will be expressed
Endorsements earned will be updated in the AWS certification profile. Status can be checked via the QR code on the back of the CWI wallet card or via the Quikcheck web link.

There are no mandatory training requirements. Candidates are encouraged to attend a seminar or self-study to become familiar with PT.


Examination Requirements
Candidates shall pass a closed book written examination on PT fundamentals consisting of at least 40 multiple choice questions in one hour, an open book written examination consisting of at least 20 questions using the AWS PT Book of Specifications in one hour and a practical examination using the AWS PT Book of Specifications in one hour.

PT candidates shall pass (with a minimum of 70% correct answers per exam part and an 80% composite average of all parts) the PT written examinations. Re-examinations for this endorsement shall be in accordance with the re-examination requirements of AWS QC1.

Practical exams are given only at approved Accredited Testing Facilities. Please refer to the table below for Exam Schedule:

Eligibility for 9-Year Recertification
Successful completion of this endorsement satisfies the re-examination requirements for 9-year recertification of CWIs or SCWIs, provided that the endorsement is taken during the immediate 9-year period. This endorsement is a one-time exemption of the re-examination requirement for 9- year recertification of CWIs or SCWIs.

Renewal Requirements
AWS PT endorsement holders are required to retake the Practical component of the PT endorsement exam every 9 years. AWS PT endorsement holders are also required to continuously maintain a valid CWI or SCWI certification.
