From educators who have advanced welding knowledge to those who've exhibited outstanding service, these awards celebrate dedication, expertise, and the advancement of welding as both an art and a science.

This award, administered by the Certification Committee, is given annually by the American Welding Society as a means of recognizing individuals participating in the Senior Certified Welding Inspector (SCWI) and Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) program whose inspection, American Welding Society, professional activity and civic activities are considered to have enhanced public awareness and opinion of both the Society and the CWI program or otherwise have made an outstanding contribution to the science of welding inspection.

This award is recognized at the National, District and Section levels. The nominee is selected at least 12 months in advance of FABTECH. Selections are made during the annual District Conference meetings for all three levels. District and Section level recognitions are automatic but National level nominee information is submitted to the AWS Certification Committee for final selection.

  • A nomination form must be completed, along with an introduction letter of support and a complete resume or CV of the individual’s qualifications. Send only complete National nominations to nationalawards@aws.org by January 1st.

This award was established by the AWS Board of Directors as a means of honoring educators in the welding community teaching in private facilities.  These individuals, in the opinion of the AWS Education Committee, have advanced the knowledge of welding to their students through apprenticeship programs, internal corporate training programs, and similar nonpublic educational activities.

This award is recognized at the National, District and Section levels. The nominee is selected at least 12 months in advance of FABTECH. Selections are made during the annual District Conference meetings for all three levels. District and Section level recognitions are automatic but National level nominee information is submitted to the AWS Education Committee for final selection.

The Howard E. Adkins Instructor Membership Award is sponsored by Mrs. Wilma Adkins and family, and is given as a means of recognizing high school, trade school, technical institute or community college instructors whose teaching activities are considered to have advanced the knowledge of welding to students in their respective schools.

This award is administered by the American Welding Society and sponsored by the Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance (RWMA). It was established in 1985, during RWMA's 50th anniversary, for initial presentation in 1986 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the invention of resistance welding. Naming of proposed recipients is the responsibility of RWMA.

It is presented annually to a living individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the technology and application of resistance welding, as evidenced by:

  1. Invention or production of new resistance welding equipment innovations or technology
  2. A unique application of resistance welding in a production environment
  3. A technical paper published in the Welding Journal or any other industry-recognized  publication, or
  4. Other contribution the RWMA Governance Committee deems worthy of recognition
  • The nominee is selected at least 10 months in advance of FABTECH and by the Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance (RWMA).
  • Complete nomination packets may be submitted for consideration to the RWMA Committee and must include an introduction letter of support and a complete resume or CV of the individual’s qualifications. Send nominations to excellenceawards@aws.org by December 31.

AWS has sponsored the Samuel Wylie Miller Memorial Medal award since 1929, which is awarded annually by the Awards Committee for a particular meritorious achievement, which, in the Committee's judgment, has contributed conspicuously to the advancement of the art of welding and cutting.

This award was established to honor a charter member of the American Welding Society and the AWS representative to the first organizational meeting of the International Institute of Welding. It is intended to foster interest in United States participation in the work of the international organization. It is awarded to a member of the American Council of the International Institute of Welding or to an AWS member who, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, has made a substantial contribution to the activities of the International Institute of Welding.

  • The deadline for submitting complete nomination packets to the Awards Committee is January 1.
