Certified Welder Certifications

The AWS Certified Welder program allows for welders to obtain multiple certifications to expand their credentials. Every certification that a welder earns increases the number of skills needed to perform a wide range of welding jobs. See a list of certifications that a welder can obtain through the CW program.

The Certified Welder (CW) program tests welders on procedures used in the structural steel, petroleum pipelines, sheet metal, and chemical refinery welding industries.

CW tests are performed at AWS Accredited Testing Facilities (ATFs) located throughout the world, and candidates must make an appointment to participate. These testing facilities adhere to strict standards for welder testing and can test welders to AWS Standard Welding Procedures, industry standard specifications, and company-supplied or non-code welding specifications.

Certified Welder Requirements

The following requirements must be met to participate in this program:

  1. Test in accordance with one of the QC7 standards below (whichever is applicable):
  2. Complete a welder performance qualification test at an ATF for AWS Certified Welder Certification (domestic or international).
  3. Submit a completed Certified Welder Application for certification.
  4. Submit Maintenance of Welder Certification prior to expiration, which verifies that the welding process was used.

Instructions

The following instructions outline the requirements of the program.

  1. Read the QC7 Standard and its supplements.
  2. Contact the ATF representative at a facility near you to register for the test.
  3. Perform welding test with the ATF.
  4. Once you have passed the test, the ATF will forward your application, qualifications test record, and payment to AWS.
  5. Read the QC7 Standard and its supplements.
  6. AWS will receive your application, test results and the registration fee up to two weeks after your skill demonstration. (This varies; check with your selected ATF.) You should receive your welder certification card and maintenance form from the AWS Certification Department two to three weeks from the date your application is received.

Exams

Welder testing must be scheduled with an AWS Accredited Testing Facility (ATF). During a scheduled appointment, the welder will deposit a sound weld that is inspected by an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). The welder’s ability to properly adhere to the Welding Procedure Specification includes fit-up, assembly, and positioning.

If a welder fails any test, they can retest at any time. It is best to discuss retesting with the ATF representative, who will be able to assist in scheduling a new test date.

Your certification remains valid as long as you submit your certification maintenance forms every six months as required by the Code of Acceptance that governed your test. As long as you can have it verified on the maintenance form that you are still performing the same welding as you originally tested for, your certification remains in effect.

Note: Most codes require maintenance every (6) months. Check the requirements of the standard that governs your certification to assure that maintenance is received by AWS at the proper intervals.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Are My Certification Choices?

Earning an AWS welding certification helps show employers that you have the hands-on abilities needed to perform specific welding processes and applications. The AWS Certified Welder Program covers welding certifications for a variety of industries, materials, welding processes, and applications. Candidates may test using procedures commonly used in structural steel, sheet metal, petroleum pipelines, pressure vessels, and chemical refinery construction.

  • What Is a Certified Welder?

The Certified Welder Program evaluates a welder's ability to produce sound welds according to a specific welding procedure and code requirement. A Certified Welder (CW) has successfully passed a performance-based welding test administered by an AWS Accredited Test Facility (ATF).

Unlike certifications that require written examinations, the AWS Certified Welder Program focuses on demonstrated welding skill. Once certified, welders can use their credential to show employers that they have met established industry standards for a particular welding process, material, and position.

  • Is AWS Welding Certification Worth It?

AWS welding certification helps demonstrate that a welder has successfully passed a performance-based welding test and possesses the skills required by industry standards. Employers often look for certified welders when hiring for fabrication, manufacturing, construction, energy, and other skilled trades positions.

Because AWS certification is nationally recognized and transferable, it can help welders verify their qualifications, pursue new career opportunities, and demonstrate their commitment to professional development. For many welders, certification is an investment in long-term career growth and earning potential.

  • What Safety Practices Should a Certified Welder Follow?

Safe welding practices are essential in every welding environment. Certified Welders should understand and follow applicable workplace safety requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilation systems, fire prevention measures, and safe equipment operating procedures.

Common welding hazards include exposure to arc radiation, fumes and gases, electrical shock, burns, and fire risks. Employers are responsible for establishing workplace safety procedures, and welders are expected to follow all applicable safety regulations and site-specific requirements.

While AWS Certified Welder certification focuses on demonstrating welding performance to an approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), safe work practices are a critical part of professional welding and career success.

  • Who Is Eligible to Become an AWS Certified Welder?

The AWS Certified Welder Program is open to anyone with the welding skills necessary to pass the required performance qualification test. There are no educational prerequisites, certification requirements, or minimum experience requirements to become a Certified Welder.

Whether you learned through a welding school, apprenticeship, military training, technical college, or on-the-job experience, you may pursue welding certification if you can successfully complete the required welding test.

  • Do I Need Formal Training or School to Become Certified?

The AWS Certified Welder Program does not have formal education or experience requirements. While training is not mandatory, developing the skills necessary to pass a welding performance test often requires practice and instruction. Individuals may qualify for certification through a variety of pathways, including vocational training programs, apprenticeships, military experience, or hands-on work experience.

Candidates must demonstrate their welding skills by successfully completing a welding performance qualification test at an AWS Accredited Test Facility. The specific requirements depend on the welding process, base material, welding position, and code under which the test is administered. Many candidates choose to attend welding schools or training programs to prepare for certification.

  • How Do I Become a Certified Welder?

The certification process is designed to verify practical welding skills rather than classroom knowledge. To become an AWS Certified Welder, you must pass a hands-on welding performance test at an AWS Accredited Test Facility. The specific requirements depend on the welding process, base material, welding position, and code under which the test is administered.

During the welding certification test, you will weld according to a qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). Your completed weld will then be evaluated to determine whether it meets the acceptance criteria of the applicable code or standard. Once your test coupon is evaluated and accepted, the ATF will submit your documents to AWS. Once AWS reviews and approves your WPQ, you become certified.

  • How Long Does It Take to Become a Certified Welder?

The time required to become a Certified Welder varies from person to person. Individuals with prior welding experience may be ready to test immediately, while those new to the trade may spend several months developing the skills needed to successfully complete a welding qualification test.

Because the AWS Certified Welder program is performance-based, certification is earned once a candidate successfully passes the required welding test and AWS receives and approves your documentation.

  • Where Can I Take a Certified Welder Test?

AWS Certified Welder tests are conducted through AWS Accredited Test Facilities (ATFs) located throughout the United States and internationally. These facilities are authorized to administer welding certification tests and evaluate welders according to AWS requirements.

To earn welding certification, candidates must complete their performance qualification test at an approved testing facility. AWS provides a directory of Accredited Test Facilities to help welders find a testing location near them.

In addition to standard code qualifications, some AWS Accredited Test Facilities offer testing to employer-specific or company-supplied welding procedures. Available certification options may vary by testing location.

  • What Happens During the Certified Welder Test?

During your Certified Welder test, you will complete a weld using a specific Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). Your work may include fit-up, assembly, positioning, and welding requirements that reflect real-world job conditions.

After the weld is completed, it is inspected and evaluated according to the acceptance criteria of the applicable code or standard. Successful completion of the welding performance test demonstrates that you possess the welding skills required for certification.

  • What Happens If I Fail the Test the First Time?

If you do not pass the welding certification test, you may retest. Many welders use the experience as an opportunity to strengthen their skills before attempting the test again.

Your AWS Accredited Test Facility can help you schedule another testing date and provide information about the specific qualification requirements. There is no limit on the number of times you may attempt to earn your welding certification.

  • How Much Does Welding Certification Cost?

The cost of welding certification varies depending on the AWS Accredited Test Facility, the welding process being tested, and the qualification requirements involved.

Because testing fees are established by individual facilities, candidates should contact their preferred testing location directly to obtain current pricing for AWS Certified Welder testing, retesting, and related fees.

  • How Long Is My Certified Welder Certification Valid?

AWS Certified Welder certification remains valid as long as continuity is maintained. To keep your welding certification active, you must submit certification maintenance documentation every six months confirming that you continue to perform the welding process for which you were certified.

As long as continuity requirements are met and maintenance forms are submitted on time, your certification can remain active indefinitely. Failure to maintain continuity may result in the certification becoming inactive, requiring you to requalify through testing.

  • How Much Does a Certified Welder Make?

Certified Welder salaries vary based on experience, geographic location, industry, employer, and welding specialization. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers is approximately $50,000–$60,000 per year, although earnings can vary significantly based on location, industry, experience, and specialization.

Welders working in specialized industries such as aerospace, energy production, shipbuilding, pipeline construction, and advanced manufacturing may earn considerably more than entry-level welders.

While welding certification does not guarantee a specific salary, earning an AWS Certified Welder credential can help demonstrate your qualifications and may improve opportunities for career advancement and higher-paying welding positions.

Visit CareersInWelding.com to explore welding career paths, salary information, and industry outlooks. You can also search current welding job openings through JobsInWelding.com to learn more about employment opportunities and employer requirements across the welding industry.

  • How Much Does a Certified Welder Make?

Yes. AWS welding certification is transferable because it is not tied to a specific employer, project, or geographic location. It’s the same in Florida as it is in Oregon, Minnesota, or any other state—even overseas. Once earned, your Certified Welder credential is recognized anywhere the qualification is accepted, provided your certification remains active. This is because you have performed satisfactorily to a standard that has national and international acceptance.

Because AWS certification is based on nationally and internationally recognized standards, welders can use their credentials when pursuing employment opportunities across the United States and in many locations around the world. This portability makes AWS Certified Welder credentials valuable for welders seeking career flexibility and mobility.

AWS has established and administers the AWS National Registry of Welders. Even though AWS Certified Welders are issued a certification card, the Registry is frequently used by employers to verify AWS Certification, or by contractors seeking welders.
