The welding industry plays a vital role in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and energy. As these industries evolve, so too does the need for skilled professionals who can tackle complex challenges with expertise. Ali AlShawaf, a failure analysis engineer for SABIC, Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia, has dedicated over two decades to advancing welding engineering. Through his active involvement with AWS, AlShawaf provides valuable insight into how global collaboration, networking, and professional development are shaping the future of welding.  

A Worldly Welding Education 

AlShawaf's career in welding engineering is rooted in a solid academic foundation and extensive industrial experience. He began his professional journey after graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He then attended the University of Nottingham in England, obtaining a master’s degree in materials and metallurgical engineering. His academic path culminated with a PhD in welding engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colo. 

His educational achievements not only shaped his technical capabilities but also served as a segue for engaging with international industry leaders, particularly through his involvement with AWS. 

Connecting with AWS  

AlShawaf’s involvement with AWS began during his PhD studies when he presented papers at FABTECH and met Society officers. This interaction led to his membership with the organization, which he has maintained on and off for about 13 years. 

He started off in the Colorado School of Mines Student Chapter (CSMSC) and eventually became the vice chair of the AWS Saudi Arabia section, where he played a key role in organizing both local and international events, such as the Materials Performance and Welding Technologies Conference and technical dinners. His volunteer work with AWS has given him access to an extensive pool of knowledge and a direct line to experienced welding engineers from around the world, a network he considers one of the biggest benefits of his membership. 

“The most important [benefit] is networking by meeting experienced engineers from different global companies with a deep knowledge of welding engineering,” he noted. 

The Challenges of Welding in Saudi Arabia  

While AlShawaf’s work in Saudi Arabia has been rewarding, he also faces unique challenges within the region’s welding industry. One of the most pressing issues is the shortage of skilled welders, particularly in the areas of nonferrous metals and high-temperature applications. 

AlShawaf believes that professional development programs and industry collaboration can play a major role in addressing these challenges. AWS helps build a stronger, more skilled workforce by providing access to certifications and knowledge. AlShawaf himself has benefitted from this approach, obtaining the Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and Certified Welding Educator (CWE) certifications through his participation in AWS seminars.  

The Power of International Collaboration  

In today’s interconnected world, the ability to collaborate internationally is more important than ever. AlShawaf highlighted the critical role that AWS plays in facilitating these connections. Through its technical events and expansive database of resources, AWS provides global access to subject matter experts, standards, technical papers, and case studies, which are invaluable for professionals navigating complex welding projects. 

“This greatly helps in the development of repair procedures or inspection reports,” AlShawaf explained. He also pointed out the importance of AWS events in showcasing new technologies and welding machines, which in turn helps improve the quality, safety, and environmental impact of welding practices worldwide while saving time and money for industrial investors.  

His work in the field reflects this holistic approach, combining technical expertise with an understanding of broader industrial needs.

As welding technology advances and industries demand higher standards, the importance of global networking and professional development cannot be overstated.
