Ray and Sandy Shook Scholarship

Ray and Sandy Shook Scholarship

Ray Shook served as the Executive Director of the American Welding Society for 15 years, from 2002 to 2017.  During his tenure, the Society experienced significant growth both in membership (surpassing 73,000) and in revenues, growing from $15 million to more than $40 million annually, with corresponding significant growth in revenue surplus and net assets.  Ray also spearheaded the alliance of the AWS Welding Show with FABTECH, creating North America’s largest annual metalworking exhibition.

During Ray’s tenure the Foundation was able to become financially self-supporting which means that every dollar that is contributed to the Foundation goes toward its mission.  He led the Society’s expansion globally overseeing the first acquisition in its 95-year history by purchasing Weldmex, the leading welding show in Mexico.  He also oversaw the purchase and move by the Society to its new 125,000-square foot world headquarters in 2012.  Always supportive of Ray and the Society, Sandy co-hosted and attended many AWS functions.

The Ray and Sandy Shook Scholarship is for students who meet the following criteria:

  • In a welding or related two-year Associate's Degree program
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • US citizen

Jobs associated with building and rebuilding roads, bridges, water, and the power grid are expected to grow by double-digit percentages–faster than the overall economy.
