Ensuring Overmatching Strength in Pipeline Girth Welds

March 2024
By: WILLIAM A. BRUCE AND RUSSELL SCOLES

In a previous Welding Journal article (Ref. 1), several girth weld failures in newly constructed cross-country pipelines were described. These failures occurred in pipelines constructed using conventional stove-pipe welding methods (i.e., cellulosic-coated AWS EXX10-type electrodes) at relatively low global strain levels either during preservice hydrostatic pressure testing or in service soon after the pipelines were commissioned. Some of these failures were attributed to undermatching weld strength and/or h..
