Certification
Program for Robotic Arc Welding - Operators and Technicians (CRAW)
AWS is thrilled to offer the
brand new Certification Program for Robotic Arc Welding - Operators and
Technicians (CRAW). This certification allows many welding personnel
employed in various welding sectors to measure themselves against
standards for their occupation. It also signifies that the CRAW
Operator or Technician has demonstrated the capability of working with
various codes, standards, and specifications. Since proof of active
practice or re-examination is required every three years, certification
also signifies that the CRAW Operator or Technician is current with the
welding industry.
Requirements
for CRAW Examination
The AWS D16.4:1999
Specification for the Qualification of Robotic Arc
Welding Personnel sets the principal requirements for taking the CRAW
examination:
FOR OPERATOR
CERTIFICATION
FOR TECHNICIAN
CERTIFICATION
Experience and
Education
Requirements
Have
minimum of 2 years of welding experience.
1 year diploma in
welding or robotic instruction
Have
minimum of (5) years welding experience with all relevant processes.
Have a 2-year
Associates Degree in Welding/Robotics/Electrical or Equivalent
Hold current CWI
(Certified Welding Inspector) certification.
Training
Recommendations
Completion
of original equipment manufacturer or equivalent Robotic Programming
Course.
Receive
instruction in the operation of quality measuring tools including
applicable computer software for measuring the weld cross section.
Be familiar with
personal computers.
*Current CWI certification is a requirement for the
CRAW-T certification. Failure to achieve and/or maintain CWI
certification will result in the CRAW-O certification ONLY.
This two-part exam is comprised of both a
Part I - multiple-choice test
consisting of 136 questions, and a Part II - Performance test that
covers the practical demonstration of knowledge and ability involving a
robotic system. A pass mark of 75% is required on Part I in order to
meet the minimum requirements for certification as CRAW Operator or
Technician.
Part I Exam:
The Part I Exam may be taken
and administered during a two-hour block of time at any of the
prearranged AWS examination sites. These sites are typically located in
major metropolitan areas around the country and are conducted on a
regular basis.
Part II -
Performance Exam:
The Part II - Performance
Exam is to consist of a series of tasks that will include a GMA welding
test plate made to Procedure Qualification Welding Procedure (PQWP).
The performance exam must be completed and passed three months before
OR after taking the Part I examination. This exam takes approximately
(2) hours to complete. An AWS CRAW - T must administer the performance
exam. Applicants are totally responsible for contacting a CRAW-T and
scheduling a performance test.
APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED WITHOUT PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS BEING
MADE FOR THE PERFORMANCE TEST.
ALL APPLICANTS
MUST SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE TWO-PART CRAW EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO
ACHIEVE CERTIFICATION.
Two-Day
Training Seminar:
To prepare applicants for the CRAW examination, AWS offers a two-day
training seminar to cover the essential requirements. This seminar was
specifically designed for our customers that are dealing with
automation and robotics issues and require additional credentials or
documentation.
Moreover, if
further credentials were not required, the training and certification
would still greatly serve AWS customers in efficient and productive use
of their automated processes.
The topics
that will be covered in this seminar include the following:
Weld Equipment
Setup
Weld Processes
Weld Examination
Definitions and
Terminology
Symbols - Welding
& Robotics
Safety
Destructive Testing
Conversion and
Calculations
Robot Programming
Welding Procedures
Programming Logic
Kinematic Concepts
Robot Arc Weld
Cell Components - ID

An Added Bonus:
By attending the Two-Day Training Seminar, you will receive the
following documents as part of your registration fee:
QC19:2002, Standard for AWS Certification of
Robotic Welding - Operators and Technicians
This standard defines the certification program for the American
Welding Society for use in the Certification of Automated Process
Operators and Technicians. These certifications require documentation
of experience, satisfactory completion of both written and practical
examinations. The examination tests the CRAW's knowledge of welding
processes, welding procedures, destructive and non-destructive tests,
welding terms, definitions, symbols, reports, safety, quality assurance
and responsibilities, robot programming and robot arc welding, and
other related subjects. Successful completion of all requirements
constitutes the basis for awarding a certification as a Robotic Arc
Welding Technician or Robotic Arc Welding Operator.

Robotic Arc Welding Personnel
Employers should use these standards to facilitate promotions, new
hires or self-evaluations. Explains what the function is and does and
describes minimum education and experience. Establishes the
qualification requirements from which a central certification agency or
an employer may develop a certification program.

CRAW Application:
Please keep in mind that
the only way to qualify for the CRAW
examination is by submitting a completed CRAW application. Registration
for the seminar that includes the cost of the exam does not
automatically ensure registration for the exam. It is AFTER your
completed CRAW application is received and processed in the
Certification Business Unit.
Standard
application processing time is (6)
weeks. Please be advised that you will be notified (6) weeks AFTER your
application has been submitted. Contacting the AWS Certification
Business Unit BEFORE the (6) week period will delay the application
processing time and further hinder the receipt of your certification
materials. We strongly urge applicants to please allow the (6) weeks
processing time so that we at AWS may efficiently and accurately serve
your certification needs.
Pricing
for the seminar, which includes the
exam is $800 member and $1,150 non-member. All checks and money order
should be made payable to AWS. Payments MUST accompany your
applications.
