The future of the welding industry depends upon preparing the next generation to meet the challenges ahead through education. The Foundation offers educational programs to foster the growth, stature and professionalism of the welding industry. AWS Foundation opportunities include the following programs:

Research Fellowships
The American Welding Society offers Fellowships or Grants to students for graduate research toward a Masters or PhD degree under a sponsoring professor at a North American University.  The fellowships are up to $25,000 er year to recipients.  For further details on the 2013-2014 request for proposals, click the above link.

D. Fred and Marian L. Bovie Technical
Awarded to a student pursuing an Associates degree in welding. Applicant must have a minimum 2.8 grade point average, and may be enrolled full or part time. Financial need is required to qualify.

One award for $2,000 for Tuition and fees only. The application deadline is February 15, for the following fall term. Funding is available June 1 - May 31.

District Scholarship Recipients
In its commitment to improve America's productivity, the AWS Foundation provides funding assistance to help students wishing to pursue vocational, community college, or degree program in a welding or a related field of study. Scholarship recipients are selected annually at AWS District Conferences.

About AWS Foundation
The AWS Foundation was established by the American Welding Society on September 13, 1989, to support programs that ensure the growth and development of the welding industry through strengthening research and educational opportunities in welding and related industries.

From giving children their first glimmer of excitement in learning about the natural sciences, to providing funding for welding engineering undergraduates and fellowships for welding research, the AWS Foundation supports the welding industry.

Led by a volunteer Board of Trustees, the Foundation is organized as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Administration, including program development, fundraising, public relations, marketing and financial management, is provided by a small development staff of the American Welding Society. Its operations are conducted from the Society's offices in Miami, Florida.

Section Scholarship Committee and
Program Guidelines
So many AWS Sections have very successful and active scholarship programs.  These guidelines were developed to further assist Sections in establishing programs or re-visit their current programs.  It is a document developed for the sole purpose of assisting Sections in their scholarship projects and is not intended to place restrictions or controls for managing a scholarship program.   Included is a sample application and support forms that may be revised to fit specific scholarship criteria.

The D. Fred Bovie Library and Museum
Through the generosity of Fred Bovie, an AWS member for 53 years and Foundation Trustee, and his wife Lou, the AWS welding library and museum is being established at AWS headquarters in Miami. The library will hold all available AWS publications and related welding documents. The museum will have welding related artifacts and supporting materials. The purpose is to institute a place where AWS history and welding memorabilia can be displayed properly and with pride.

We want your input. If you or your Section members know or have any items that may be appropriate for the library or museum displays, please contact Wendy Sue Reeve at 800-443-9353, x293. Display space is limited but every effort will be made to address all donations and offerings.
