THE WORLD OF ENERGY – WELDING’S GREATEST CHALLENGE
August 31 - September 1, 2010
San Diego, CA

Examine the many avenues of energy, including the important aspects of coal-powered plants, the present and future of nuclear power, activities in pipeline construction, land-based and offshore work in liquefied natural gas, solar energy, and wind power. There will be a big emphasis on metals, with Grade 91 steel, 2205, and the many other duplex stainless steels, and nickel-based alloys.

On-hand to welcome the members of the audience will be AWS President John C. Bruskotter, a heavy player in the offshore welding industry himself.

The keynote speaker will be Professor Sudarsanam Babu from Ohio State, who is the director of the new Center for Integrative Materials Joining. The center's main aim will be to close the gap between material devleopment and weldability.

Professor Babu will be followed on the program by Lance Harbison who will speak on Westinghouse's position in the nuclear renaissance. Nate Ames from Edison Welding Institute (EWI) will discuss the problems in introducing new technologies in nuclear fabrication. Ian Harris, another speaker from EWI, and Teresa Melfi, from Lincoln Electric, will both be looking at the welding of wind towers.

In the oil and gas industries, Richard Marslender from Kiewit Offshore Services will discuss offshore welding projects; Kevin Beardsley of Lincoln Electric will cover pipeline construction; and Mike Blakely of Dynamic Materials will talk about the use of explosion welding in downstream oil refineries. Ben Pletcher from Chicago Bridge & Iron will discuss the role of welding in the construction of LNG facilities.

Automotive will not be overlooked, with Benjamin Christian from General Motors, who will inform the audience about the use of ultrasonic welding of dissimilar metals in the batteries for electric vehicles. Lasers will also be on the agenda.

Todd Palmer from Penn State will cover laser cladding and laser additive manufacture, while Ed Hansen of ESAB will discuss hybrid laser welding, as well as friction stir welding. In the world of materials, Jeff Henry of Structural Integrity will take on the popular creep-strength-enhanced ferritic steels, especially P91, while Don Tillack will provide useful information on the problems and solutions involved in welding dissimilar metals. Last but not least, James Byrne from Miller Electric will describe his company's new induction heating system.

13th ANNUAL ALUMINUM WELDING CONFERENCE
September 21 - 22, 2010
Location: Seattle, WA

At this conference, a distinguished panel of aluminum-industry experts will survey the state of the art in aluminum welding technology and practice.

The 13th Aluminum Welding Conference will also provide several opportunities for you to network informally with speakers and other participants, as well as visit an exhibition showcasing products and services available to the aluminum welding industry.

Aluminum lends itself to a wide variety of industrial applications because of its light weight, high strenght-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and other attributes. However, because its chemical and physical properties are different from those of steel, welding of aluminum requires special processes, techniques and expertise.

What's New In Weld Consumables?
November 2, 2010
Atlanta, GA

Developers of new weld consumables are very active of late in their attempts to keep pace with the demands from industry. Deanna Murlin from Lincoln Electric will address the new filler metals targeted toward wind towers where impact toughness's of 60-100 ft-lb at -40°F are required. A new consumable developed mainly by researchers at the Electric Power Research Institute with help from Babcock and Wilcox and Euroweld will be introduced by Roger Swain of Euroweld. Intended for dissimilar metal welding, this nickel-base alloy is aptly called EPRI P87.

Russel Fuchs of Bohler Welding GroupUSA will provide an update on the welding of the creep-enhanced ferritic steels. The most important member of this group is P91 steel. Joe Zowadny will be on hand to describe Avesta Welding’s new consumable for welding the popularlean duplex LDX 2101 stainless steels.

Doug Krebs from Hobart Brothers Co.will talk about productivity enhancements in the metal core process, while Jerry Mathison of ESAB Welding & Cutting Products will describe some of the improvements in flux-cored welding filler metals, some made possible by lower diffusible hydrogen levels.

Stoody’s Ravi Menon will go into some detail concerning the recently developed composite alloy systems for hard facing and will even mention the new “crack-free” wires. Kevin Lyttle from Praxair, Inc. will discuss the favorable results in welding specialty stainless or aluminum alloys when minor additions of hydrogen and nitrogen are added to an argon based mixture.

Weld Repair and the Strengthening of Welded Structures
November 3, 2010
Atlanta, GA

From the standpoint of knowledge, one of the most important aspects in welding is the repair of faulty welds or in the prevention of failures from occurring in the first place. This topic or topics will be one of the most important conferences at the Fabtech conference.

Appropriately, Duane K. Miller of Lincoln Electric will be the keynoter and he will discuss the new AWS D1.7 code. Other speakers will include Jim Worman of the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors who will describe what is needed to obtain an "R" certificate; David J. Barton of PCI/WEC will comment on weld repairs in the nuclear industry; and Brent M. Williams of Miller Electric will discuss the use of inverter technology for aircraft engine repair work.
