Description:
The Advanced Visual Inspection workshop is an eight-hour course designed for current inspectors that need 9-year recertification or have previously taken the VIW workshop but failed the part B exam. The workshop will consist of an advanced discussion of the limitations and advantages of visual inspection, types of weld data that may be obtained by visual inspection and types of discontinuities which are commonly encountered during the visual inspection of welds. Participants are given an opportunity to practice using their personal inspection tools to make measurements on weld replicas.

Prerequisite Knowledge & Experience:
  • See AWS B 5.1 – Section 5 and Table 1
  • Reading, writing, mathematics, listening, troubleshooting, decision-making, problem-solving, time-management, team-work, acquiring and evaluating data, teaching others, application of measurement systems, application of technology, reasoning, integrity/honesty and working with cultural and gender diversity.

Class Time: Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Workshop Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, each attendee will have been presented with the material necessary to comprehend and:
  1. understand the limitations, advantages, and application of visual inspection.
  2. identify basic weld discontinuities.
  3. utilize common visual inspection tools.
  4. apply a sample weld acceptance specification.
  5. demonstrate skills in the evaluation of weld replicas.
