American Welding Society - Awards Programs

The AWS Awards are designed to recognize men and women in the industrial, education and research communities who have made distinctive contributions to advance the science, technology and application of welding and allied processes, including joining, brazing and soldering, cutting and thermal spraying.


Awards Recognizing Outstanding Achievements

Robert J. Conkling Memorial Award:
This is a restricted award recognizing schools that produce the national winners of the SkillsUSA welding competition.

AWS Extraordinary Welding Awards:
These awards recognize welding excellence in construction, fabrication, and manufacturing and to designate those welded structures that purpose has important in, or influence on, history. Nomination packets must contain detailed information regarding the formation and function of the structure submitted for consideration. The selections are made by the AWS Past Presidents Committee. Nomination packets must be submitted at least 10 months in advance of the AWS Welding Show.

Poster Session Awards:
These awards recognize individuals who create posters that communicate technical accomplishments in a visual format. There are separate recognitions for student and commercial posters. Specifics on how to submit a poster are listed in the Welding Journal magazine at least 12 months prior to the AWS Welding Show.

Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor Membership Award:
This award is recognized at the National, District and Section levels. The nominee is selected at least 12 months in advance of the AWS Welding Show. Selections are made during the annual District Conference meetings for all three levels. District and Section level recognitions are automatic but National level nominee information is submitted to the AWS Awards Committee for final selection. A nomination form must be completed along with an introduction letter of support and a complete resume or CV of the individual’s qualifications.

Professor Koichi Masubuchi Award:
This award is sponsored by the Center for Ocean Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Nomination packets may be submitted for consideration to the AWS Awards Committee and must include an introduction letter of support and a complete resume or CV of the individual’s qualifications. Nomination packets must be submitted at least 12 months in advance of the AWS Welding Show.

Nominations must be received by the deadline of November 3, 2008 . The award will be presented during the 2008 FABTECH International & The AWS Welding Show. Submit your nomination to Prof. John DuPont at jnd1@lehigh.edu

Robotic and Automatic Arc Welding Award:
The award is selected by the AWS D16 Committee on Robotic and Automatic Welding. The nominee is selected at least 10 months in advance of the AWS Welding Show. A nomination form must be completed along with an introduction letter of support and a complete resume or CV of the individual’s qualifications.

Safety and Health Award:
The award is selected by the AWS Safety and Health Committee. The nominee is selected at least 10 months in advance of the AWS Welding Show. Nominee packets may be submitted for consideration to the committee and must include an introduction letter of support and a complete resume or CV of the individual’s qualifications.

Image of Welding Awards:
The AWS Welding Equipment Manufacturers Committee (WEMCO), announces the recipients of the fourth annual Image of Welding Awards. Divided into seven categories, these awards recognize individuals and organizations who have excelled in promoting the image of welding in their communities.
